Homemade Apple Pie

There’s nothing quite like homemade apple pie! Here’s my favorite recipe for pie dough and apple pie filling. It’s always a favorite in my household!

PIE DOUGH

INGREDIENTS:

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour

  • 2 pinches of salt

  • Pie Dough

  • 16 tablespoons (2 sticks) butter, at room temperature

  • 10-12 tablespoons ice water

DIRECTIONS:

Combine the flour and salt in a medium bowl. Using your hands, gently work the butter into the flour until the butter pieces are each about the size of a dime. Make a well in the center of the mixture, and pour 10 tablespoons of the ice water into the well. Fold gently to incorporate, using the additional tablespoons of water if the dough is too dry and crumbly. Fold until the dough comes together. Do not overwork the dough. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least one hour.

PIE FILLING AND BAKING

INGREDIENTS:

8-INCH Pastry for 8-inch Two-crust Pie

  • ½ cup sugar

  • 3 tablespoons flour*

  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg

  • ¼ teaspoon cinnamon

  • Dash salt

  • 5 cups thinly sliced pared tart apples

  • 1 tablespoon butter or margarine

DIRECTIONS:

Heat oven to 425°. Prepare pastry. Stir together suagar, flour, nutmeg, cinnamon, and salt; mix with apples. Turn into pastry-lined pie pan; dot with butter. Cover with top crust and add slits; seal and flute. Bake 40 to 50 minutes or until the crust is brown and juice begins to bubble through slits in the crust.

Cook pie with extra pan underneath.
